Walking Tour of the Sumner Hill Historic District in Jamaica Plain

Saturday, September 15th
, 11am
Departs from the Loring-Greenough House
12 South Street, Jamaica Plain

Join the Boston Preservation Alliance for a tour of this National Historic District led by knowledgeable guides from the Jamaica Plain Historical Society.  View a sumptuous sampling of 19th-century Victorian houses — one of the finest collections of “painted ladies” outside of San Francisco.

The Sumner Hill neighborhood includes an outstanding variety of large single-family residences that were built between 1850 and 1900 and the structures encompass a multitude of architectural styles including Italianate, Second Empire, Victorian Gothic, Stick, Queen Anne, Shingle, and Colonial Revival.  Among the structures are the ancestral home of the founder of the Dole Pineapple Company, as well as the homes of progressives who were active as abolitionists and woman suffragists.

This event is free for members of the Alliance and JPHS and $10 for non-members.  Space is limited.  Please register by September 7th to reserve a spot.

For more information, please email Christine Piontek or call 617.367.2458.

About Boston Preservation Alliance
The Boston Preservation Alliance is a nonprofit organization that protects and improves the quality of Boston’s distinct architectural heritage. Through advocacy and education, we bring people and organizations together to influence the future of Boston’s historic buildings, landscapes and communities.

About Jamaica Plain Historical Society
Jamaica Plain is a small neighborhood of Boston, but one that has an unusually big history. JP encompasses 3.07 square miles and yet has a tremendously rich and varied history. The Jamaica Plain Historical Society (JPHS) sponsors occasional lectures and a regular weekly series of walking tours during the summer. We welcome contributions of photographs and historic essays about Jamaica Plain for use in our newsletter and on their web site. JPHS meets on the second Tuesday of each month at Doyle's (3484 Washington Street) at 7PM.
